a little bit of organizing

i realize i've spent quite a bit of time talking about ikea for the past couple days. i kind of love that store. the reason we drove 30 minutes to go shopping was to buy a shelf for the boys room. see that picture above? the before picture? it makes me twitch. this was what their room looked like...clean. such a disorganized pile of stuff. seriously, i'm cringing. it was hard to find a piece of furniture to fit this space, but thanks to the ikea expedit series i found the perfect shelf!
and this is what it looks like "after" the new shelf was put together by michael tonight. i'm so excited about the new look for their room. notice this picture only shows you one corner of their room...i still have some work ahead of me in the closet. and don't even get me started on ella's room. that will have to wait until she is back in school so i can bring in the bulldozer. i love organizing though, and was very excited to finally start organizing the boys' toys!

making a mural

when we went to ikea yesterday we bought a big roll of paper (under $5!). ella wanted to make a mural like ramona and her father did in the book Ramona & her Father (and in the movie). so we gathered our supplies...markers, crayons, and pencils (i considered watercolors, but decided against it, we will try that another day!).
then all three kids set to work on the mural. we had decided to make our house, and the area we live in. ella gave the boys ideas and helped them figure out what to draw. it was so neat to watch them all be so creative, and to work cooperatively with each other.

look at these two boys working side by side!

ella drew the library, since we spend soooo much time there.

here is the work in progress, they took a break for a few hours, but ella said she is going to go back to work on it this evening. from right to left: the river, cincinnati, our house, the road (with our van on it), the library and a park. i can't wait to see what they come up with next!

{this moment}

Inspired by Soule Mama:
{this moment} - A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. If you're inspired to do the same, leave a link to your 'moment' in the comments for all to find and see.

ten year anniversary

ten years ago i married my best friend. i know, i know, i sound like a hallmark card. but it's the truth! he's my best friend. he knows me better than anyone else does, treats me with great respect, laughs at my jokes (no matter how corny they are), loves me as i am (imperfections and all), and is by any definition, my soul mate.
since it is our ten year anniversary this year we decided to splurge a little, and two nights ago we celebrated a wee bit early with a fantastic date night. we ate dinner at senate restaurant downtown...they specialize in gourmet hot dogs, but their burger is voted one of the best in cincinnati, and i can now attest to that. yummo! and michael had the lobster blt..which he thoroughly enjoyed. and their poutine is to die for!

after dinner we headed to a concert ~ coyotte grace and the indigo girls. i have no words for this...it was just a fabulous concert!

tonight, on the night of our actual anniversary we celebrated in a different way. dinner with our children, dinner as a family, celebrating what we have created together in these ten years. my cooking has been somewhat sporadic since henry was born...i am ashamed to admit that we eat out way too often, and our meals are less than well-balanced. but tonight i pulled out all the stops and created a feast! i made butter chicken from the pioneer woman's blog, accompanied by roasted asparagus & zucchini, naan, and pineapple. it was quite delicious if i do say so myself.

and then we exchanged gifts. ella gave us this beautiful box filled with all sorts of cards that she has been making us this week. such treasures! i wanted to give michael something memorable for our anniversary, so i had a portrait made of our home. it is the home his grandfather built over 50 years ago, and the home we lived in when we first got married. a friend of michael's from high school, CR Adams did this gorgeous pen & ink portrait. You should check out his work, it is a great gift idea!

and for the mama....michael came home with a garnet pendant, which is the birthstone for january, in honor of our youngest babe born this past january. i've said it before, but i'll say it again...i'm a lucky girl.

my three sons

two of my three sons have taken to dressing themselves lately.

max no longer believes in casual friday or even pajama days for that matter. he wears his tie to dress things up quite often.
and sam has insisted on wearing rainboots everyday this week, only taking them off to sleep (at his mother's insistence). without socks. and man, can those froggies jump!
and all three boys enjoy pretending they are airplanes and soaring through the air.
my sons are a constant source of joy and entertainment.

and then there is my girl. my sweet little girl, who is becoming a young lady right before my eyes. and she still lets me pick her outfits ;)
we got this lovely twirlaway skirt on etsy last week, for her birthday...because mama's sewing machine is collecting dust at the moment.

"lunch fun" giveaway!

this week’s giveaway is something I put together to help make a packed lunch more “fun”. I have been using some of these things in my childrens’ packed lunches to brighten their day and wanted to share with you! Of course, if you don’t pack lunches for yourself, your children or even your spouse, then you could use these items as a gift for someone, or many of them would be perfect for their original purpose…baking!

Here it is…you have FOUR chances to win! That’s right, you can enter this contest FOUR times! But (THIS IS IMPORTANT) please be sure to leave separate comments for each entry! Do not put all of your entries into one comment. And don't forget to leave contact information. Here are the four ways you can enter:

1. Leave a comment below telling me something you do to make your child's packed lunch special, or how you are taking steps to make their lunch more environmentally friendly!

2. Share this giveaway with your friends, either via facebook, twitter, or your own personal blog (linking back to this post), and leave a comment below letting me know you did so.

the bento phenomenom

when ella was in kindergarten i packed her lunch nearly every single day (not grilled cheese day…the girl loves her grilled cheese). but after baby #4 arrived the packed lunches were few and far between. this coming school year i will have two kids in elementary school, so i am determined to pack their lunches as often as i can. i want to save money, and also, i want to control what they eat a little bit. when i pack their lunch i know that they will eat it, because i pack foods i know are good for them, and that i know they like. at school they pass over foods that they don’t like, and do not end up with a balanced meal on their tray.

i want to find more interesting things to pack for their lunches this year…not just your usual peanut butter & jelly and a banana. so i have been spending some time online looking for ways to spruce up our lunches, and i have been reading about this “bento” phenomenon that is gaining popularity in the u.s. in japan mothers have been packing bento lunches for their children for years, they design these elaborate lunches that are healthy, and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. google the word bento, you will see what i mean! these women are making rice balls shaped like animals, veggies that look like flowers, and more. there are blogs all over the internet documenting these creative lunches. i like the idea of making my children’s lunch “cute” in an effort to get them to try new foods, or to be excited about eating good food. here is a picture of my first attempt at making “bento” lunches for my three kids.
not quite as fancy as those you see on the internet, but they got a kick out of them. i used baking accessories to spruce up the lunch. i have to admit though, that even a pirate flag was not enough to convince sam to try the celery, but i will keep trying and maybe someday he will decide to take a nibble. i doubt they will get fancy lunches every day…but they will be a nice special treat for them. another idea I had was to stick sweet notes in their lunches. i’ve done this in the past for ella occasionally, and she loves the surprise.

i think what i like best about these bento lunches is that they are environmentally friendly. that is my major goal this year, is to pack lunches that produce very little waste. ella’s school is having a fundraiser right now in conjunction with easy lunchboxes. we bought some for ella, max and daddy for packed lunches, and i have to say, they are quite cool, perfect for packing lunches, and lots of space. if you are interested in purchasing these for your family shoot me an email and i will send you the code to use so that her school gets credit for your purchase: katie@cards-by-katie.com. i love these lunchboxes; i was able to pack their lunch with very little garbage involved. next thing i need to do is teach myself how to sew those little reusable bags for sandwiches and snacks.

stay tuned for a giveaway here on the little things on monday…you can win fun things to spruce up your child’s lunch (or your own lunch!).

ps…if you are wondering what happens to the food scraps from this lunch, mama took care of them, they were not thrown away ;)

fabulous friday

it's been a pretty fabulous friday round these parts...mama got to spend quite of bit of time in the kitchen preparing all kinds of tasty treats for a party...the kids and i had lunch with grandma sharon...my new (to us) catbird baby pikkolo carrier arrived in the mail
...ella went to a bridal shower and wore a dress fit for a princess

...and a much-missed daddy came home from his business trip

Mini Open Face Tomato Appetizers

It's been a while since I've posted a recipe, so here is a very special (and tasty) recipe, handed down to me from my Nana & my Aunt Patti. It's a family favorite, always a hit at the parties. You all know how much I love my appetizers...

Mini Open Face Tomato Appetizers

Ingredients:
French Bread
Butter
1 box Cream Cheese
¼ cup Mayonnaise
Pepper
Basil
Roma Tomatoes
Olive Oil

Step one:
Slice french bread, spread melted butter on slices & broil until slightly brown. cool and then keep in an air-tight container until needed.

Step two: Mix one package cream cheese with ¼ cup mayonnaise and an oversized teaspoon of pepper & an oversized teaspoon of basil.

Step three: Slice the tomatoes thinly and place in a container with olive oil and lots of pepper & basil.

All of these steps can be done a day or two ahead of time. When you are ready to serve: spread cream cheese on bread and top with one tomato slice.
Delicious!

because i love baby toes

summer vacation

the birdcage

recently i was asked to make or procure a card holder of some sort for my cousin ben's wedding. when she asked me to do this favor my aunt said that she trusted me to do whatever i would like, and that i could in fact cover a shoe box with pretty paper and cut a hole in the top. and as a matter of fact, being a preschool teacher by trade, i am very good at covering shoe boxes with paper and making them pretty (think valentine's day boxes x 20). but that idea was not appealing to me for this wedding. i wanted to do something divine. and from the very beginning i had birdcages on the brain. i surfed the web tirelessly, looking for ideas and inspiration, and couldn't find a good diy project. i did however find the "monster box", and when i threatened to use that my cousin said "go for it!". but no. it had to be pretty. i got pretty frustrated because i couldn't figure out how to make this gorgeous card holder that was in my head. so i went shopping and looked at regular ol' white card boxes that they sell in the wedding aisles of craft stores. they were $50!!! that's crazy! they were plain white boxes with a hole in the top! it was while i was at one of these stores that i found this:
i was in love. this was the birdcage. i mean, look at that little door...could it get any cuter?
so i took it home and gave it to my husband and said "i need to put cards in this" and off came the top. he meant to salvage it so it could be put back on, but it was too fragile, and it fell into disrepair on the workbench.
so the next step was to paint the cage gold. i do not recommend painting by hand with acrylic paints.
i do however recommend using spray paint!
and then i added a few butterflies (thus making it a butterfly cage instead of a birdcage?). and voila, the card holder for the wedding is complete!

flat stanley

this past school year ella’s first grade teacher (the fabulous mrs. harris) read the students a book called Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. the book is about a young boy who gets flattened when a bulletin board falls on him. seriously…i don’t make this stuff up. After he gets flattened he gets mailed all over the place to have adventures. the children then made their own flat stanley dolls and mailed them to someone they know who lives far away. ella mailed three flat stanley dolls…to my cousin anna and her husband steve in madison, wisconsin, one to my cousin brian in dublin, ireland, and one to my uncle tom in washington dc. her stanley dolls had some fun adventures and then were mailed back to her school with postcards, letters, maps, pictures, books, and more. my cousin brian’s package just happened to arrive on st. patrick’s day! this wonderful literacy-based lesson helped the students learn about the world around them. ella got such a kick out of this project.

ella has been a bit blue because her daddy has to go on a business trip this week and will be out of town for her birthday. while he was packing she came out with one of her flat stanley dolls and asked him to take him along on the business trip so she would know what was going on during his trip. michael packed stanley and the digital camera and away they went. stanley has already checked in with ella via pictures on the cell phone, and she was so tickled by that. i thought this was a fabulous idea that she had, and thought i would share it with my friends, in case they have a trip coming up and a sad child.
how do you handle it when you have to go out of town and your child is blue?
flat stanley’s adventures: checking jet engines, having a meal at “ella’s deli”, ice fishing, hanging out with michelle obama, baking sweet treats, and long walks in ireland.

fortune

i found this little bit of wisdom tucked in my fortune cookie this weekend.
